Schedule: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 3:30 – 5:45 PM
Schedule varies within these hours based on location and position.
Term: September 2023-June 2024
Rate: $50 per hour

Organization Description
Sistema Toronto is a free after-school music and social development program for children living in underserved communities with the end goal of transformative social change. Our students learn
together for 10 hours each week where they play in orchestras, sing in choirs, and beat drums in percussion ensembles. We build stronger communities by enabling children from marginalized neighbourhoods to grow and thrive as engaged citizens and future leaders. Sistema Toronto teachers work closely with students to develop their musical abilities as well as build life skills like empathy, hard work, trust, and kindness.

Position Descriptions

Strings:
Sistema Toronto violin, viola, and cello instructors work closely with students to help develop their musical abilities and social skills. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Teaching Artists will work with group strings classes at either Junior (ages 8-9), Intermediate (ages 9-10) or Senior (ages 11-12) levels as well as provide semi-private lessons. Sistema Toronto Teaching Artists plan and execute their own lessons in line with the Sistema Toronto Music and Social Curriculum with support from the teaching team, Academic Manager, COO, and the CEO. Sistema Toronto Teaching Artists are encouraged to be creative and bring their own teaching styles and ideas into the classroom.

Yorkwoods: Monday, Tuesday
East Scarborough: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
Lambton Park: Tuesday, Thursday

Choir:
The Choir Teaching Artist will work with two groups of 20-30 students (ages 8-12). Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Teaching artists will support student vocal technique development (posture, breathing, pitch matching) as well solfège and performance practice. Sistema Toronto Choir Teaching Artists plan and execute their own lessons in line with the Sistema Toronto Music and Social Curriculum with support from the teaching team, Academic Manager, COO, and the CEO. Piano proficiency is recommended for Teachings Artists at Yorkwoods and Scarborough and required for Parkdale. Sistema Toronto Teaching Artists are encouraged to be creative and bring
their own teaching styles and ideas into the classroom.

East Scarborough: Monday, Friday

*Note: Parkdale position is a 3-month term (September – December) with the possibility of extension to June as an accompanist and team teacher.

Music & Movement:
The Music & Movement Teaching Artist will work with group of 10-15 students (ages 6-7). Drawing on Early Childhood Music Education (ECME) principals such as Orff, Kodaly, Suzuki, and Dalcroze.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the teacher will help prepare the beginner students to begin playing violin or cello. The classroom is equipped with Orff Instruments (xylophones, glockenspiels and hand percussion instruments) and the students will also work on vocal techniques (posture, breathing, pitch matching) as well as basic theory, solfège, and performance practice. Sistema Toronto Choir Teaching Artists plan and execute their own lessons in line with the Sistema Toronto Music and Social Curriculum with support from the teaching team, Academic Manager, COO, and the CEO. Sistema Toronto teachers are encouraged to be creative and bring their own teaching styles and ideas into the classroom.

East Scarborough: Thursday, Friday
Lambton Park: Monday

*Strong preference given to candidates available for all 4 days.

Requirements
These positions are suited for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and naturally communicative
individuals with experience working with children. We are looking for candidates who have a strong musical background as well as educational experience. The ability to work cooperatively and flexibly with a busy teaching team are essential assets.

  • Music degree or equivalent experience
  • 1+ year teaching experience
  • Strong communication skills, patience
  • Values consistent with those of SistemaToronto
  • Preference given to candidates with group teaching experience
